Former East German Barkas B1000 ambulance

Photo of a Barkas B1000,"SMH-3", MICU, ex German Democratic Republic, GDR, (East Germany), ca 1988, with 3 beacons and electronic siren by Rhula electic VEB. This unit was taken over later by the Berlin FB, see the logo"Berliner Feuerwehr" and used shortly before replaced by MB 310D, Binz emergency ambulance. The Barkas was the eastern counterpart of the VW Transporter, with a 50hp, 3cyl, 2-stroke engine ! which gave him a characteristic sound and oil burning scooter-like smoke trail, acceleration 0-100kph (top speed) seemed like half an hour !
