Bedford CF Ambulance at RAF Boulmer in 1988.

This was seen at RAF Boulmer (in Northumberland) back in 1988/9. It reminded me of those seen in London in the 70's.

London did use Bedford CFs, but with different bodywork.

I think London used Martin Walter, Mountain Range, Wadham and Hanlon bodies at various times. Apart from some early vehicles they were all on the long wheelbase chassis like this vehicle. This followed problems in Scotland and Durham with wheel stud failure on the 25 cwt SWB chassis. In London no spare wheel was carried and I believe mechanics had to come out to torque the wheel nuts correctly in the case of a puncture!
Does anyone know the body manufacturer of this RAF vehicle?

Lobdon had mainly Dormobile bodies on early CFs

Roger (or anyone else!)- perhaps you can help on this. I think Dormobile was a trade name for Martin Walter but was Mountain Range the successor to Dormobile/M.W.? To the best of my recollection the bodies were similar. Also could the RAF vehicle have been built by Lomas?
Thanks in advance !!

Dormobile was part of the Charringtons Group, and traded as Dormobile Ltd from Folkestone in Kent.
I started on ambulances in the 1980s, so missed out on early brochures. Mountain (formerly Mountain-Range) came from further north (Cheshire, I think). The RAF vehicle could be a Lomas, difficult to tell with GRP bodies. The only real answer is to "open the tin", ie take a look at the makers plates or MoD contract documents.

I had a look at some computer printouts that I haven't filed yet, and you are right. Dormobile descended from Martin Walter (est 1773), harness makers to the gentry. They began with bespoke coachwork at the dawning of the motor age.Dormobile went into liquidation in 1994, so weren't taken over by Mountain (cumbria and not Cheshire as I thought) Mountain also went bust, and the design for their newly developed body, the LAZER, was bought and built by Customline, later UVG. Hope that helps!

Roger, many thanks, I didn't realise the LAZER body had started with Mountain. The last of them seem to have disappeared from London in recent months!!

The body I believe is a Herbert Lomas from Hanforth, my friends father painted many of them in the 1980's. They built many Landrover 109 and 128 Military Ambulances.

I own one exactly like this one. Only the stering wheel is on the left side. It was built for a RAF base in Germany in 1978.
Is is stil in use as a campervan.
